May I find on my long journey inward -
winding my ways along the inner labyrinth -
balance
wholeness
peace
connectedness.
May I find love of self and love of others -
not because I deserve it,
nor because I prayed so hard,
or performed the rituals the right way,
or believed so strongly and so sincerely…
A gift of grace I ask, o please -
I don’t know what else to do,
or who to ask -
in return
I will plant a prayer flag of hope
in the hard clay of my heart.
I will try to love my neighbor each day,
even when they refuse to use their turn signals.
O Trickster God may it amuse you to impart this gift
I dream of receiving, I dream of sharing,
that sacred gift most overlooked,
an ordinary day -
I offer this my prayer
to the dark echoing void.

The labyrinth is a beautiful metaphor for the contemplative life. Lovely poem, Kerry.

i don’t think you need to ask forgiveness for what you feel when your neighbors don’t use their turn signals because as long as you didn’t use a rifle to express yourself, you’re doing better than lots of good ole boys in the south. but if you feel the need, then so be it.
i do love the poem.

“I will plant a prayer flag of hope in the hard clay of my heart…” is particularly poignant. Really lovely, Kerry.

I agree with our Rosy, “I will plant a prayer flag in the hard clay of my heart…” is amazing. Such an image, and such an idea!

This is such a strong poem full of strking images. It reads for me like a series of wise words and phrases, each of which could be chosen as the opening lines for a meditation.
It is these lines especially that resonate for me–
not because I deserve it,
nor because I prayed so hard,
or performed the rituals the right way,
or believed so strongly and so sincerely…
A gift of grace I ask, o please -
I don’t know what else to do,
or who to ask -
I have begun to pray in recent times, simply asking for mySprit Guides to lead me towards that which I need to do.
Your oem deserves a wider audience.
